Deadbolts are an excellent choice for an external door lock. They come in three forms—single cylinder, double cylinder, and lockable thumbturn. Single cylinders are the ones most commonly found in American homes. They are fairly simple, featuring a key slot on the outside and what’s known as a thumbturn on the inside to switch the lock back and forth. The thumbturn is what you see as you lock the door from inside. While it is quick and easy to lock, its weakness centers on the breaching of an adjacent portal, say a window, allowing the intruder to reach inside to turn the thumb latch.
