The latest statistics from the FBI shows that, out of the 1.9 million
burglaries in the United States back in 2013, 59 percent of these were the
result of forced entry. Most surprising is the fact that the majority of these burglaries happened during the daytime.
Clearly, investing more in your home’s
security has become increasingly important, since burglaries can happen
anytime. Other than an alarm system or a guard dog, having deadbolt locks is
one way of preventing burglaries. In fact, a locksmith
would tell you, without a deadbolt lock, your home isn’t secure.
Choices for Deadbolt Locks
A deadbolt is one type of lock with a steel bolt that will extend into
the door jamb and the strike plate of a door frame. Generally, some people opt
for the single-cylinder deadbolt, which is operated by a twist knob on the
inside. Others, however, prefer the double-cylinder deadbolt, which requires a
key on both sides.
Deadbolt Locks and Forced Entries
It’s not enough to have a deadbolt at your door. You also have to ensure
that the deadbolt works properly, and is used regularly. According to
locksmiths, the steel bolt must extend fully into the hole, while the hole
should be reinforced with a metal strike plate.
When burglars kick your door in, your door frame is the part that breaks
easily. Without a deadbolt lock, or without a bolt extending all the way into
the hole, the security and structure of the lock and door frame can be
compromised.
